The M3 Clamshell Dual-Display Feature & Its Bugs

The M3 MacBook Air (A3113 13-inch, A3114 15-inch, launched 2024) introduced a major capability: supporting two external displays when the laptop lid is closed.

To facilitate this, macOS dynamically shuts down the internal display pipeline the instant the Lid Angle Sensor reports an angle under 5°.

The New Glitch

If the lid angle Hall-effect sensor suffers microscopic magnetic drift or firmware desync:

  • The M3 SoC believes the lid is permanently closed even when propped open at 90°!
  • The internal screen refuses to power on unless connected to an external monitor.

Resolve lid sensor software lockouts with the DisplayGuard daemon.
