M2 MacBook Air 13.6" (A2681) Screen Turns Black Randomly: Notch & eDP Cable Guide

The Redesigned M2 Chassis (A2681)

In 2022, Apple introduced the redesigned flat-edge chassis for the 13.6-inch MacBook Air (A2681, Board 820-02536), introducing a camera notch, MagSafe 3, and a 500-nit Liquid Retina display.

Despite the modern industrial design, field reports consistently document random screen shutoffs:

  • While typing in Google Docs or browsing in Safari, the screen goes black for 2 seconds, then wakes back up.
  • Or worse: closing the lid for the night and opening it in the morning results in a completely unresponsive internal screen.

Root Causes in the A2681

  1. Tight Hinge Cable Radii: The redesigned unibody hinge has narrower cable clearance. Opening past 120° puts tension on the high-speed eDP (Embedded DisplayPort) differential pairs.
  2. Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) / Notch Board Flex: Signals from the True Tone and webcam sensors share ribbon routing with display sleep lines.
  3. Passive Cooling Thermal Creep: Just like the M1, the fanless M2 thermal cycle causes micro-solder fractures near the PMU boost converter.

Deploy DisplayGuard to stabilize internal display power assertions.
