Why Do Phone Photos Flip Sideways on Websites?

When you take a portrait photo on an iPhone or Android phone, the physical camera sensor does not physically rotate. Instead, it captures the raw pixels in standard landscape orientation and writes a metadata tag called EXIF Orientation (Tag 0x0112):

  • Orientation 1: Normal landscape
  • Orientation 6: Rotated 90° clockwise (Standard Portrait)
  • Orientation 8: Rotated 270° clockwise

While your phone's photo viewer reads this tag and displays the picture upright, many web browsers, CMS platforms, and online portals ignore EXIF tags. The result? Your profile photo or document scan appears sideways.

Permanent Physical Rotation vs EXIF Soft Rotation

Using the Image Rotate Tool on Tools24Now physically recalculates and swaps pixel coordinates on the canvas, resetting the EXIF orientation tag to 1 (normal). Your photo stays upright across every device and website permanently.

  2. Upload your tilted or upside-down photo.
